GROWTH // THE SMOTHERING ARMS OF MERCY - DIGIPAK CD
GROWTH began as a study in isolation by brothers Tristan (guitars/bass/artwork) and Nelson Barnes (drums) in Melbourne, Australia, after a decade's absence from each other while pursuing music overseas. With the line-up soon rounded out by Luke Frizon on vocals (ex Jack The Stripper), the trio set out to create music that explored the human aspects of connection, trauma, despair, and the fragility of hope. The result is THE SMOTHERING ARMS OF MERCY, a claustrophobic narrative of total spiritual collapse written while in psychiatric care and thrown over nine suffocating acts. This marks the first part of a trilogy, detailing in honesty the extremity of recovery from mental illness. The debut album was recorded in Melbourne, produced and engineered by Growth, drums engineered by Troy McCosker (Ne Obliviscaris), and mixed/mastered by Fredrik Nordström (Opeth, The Haunted) in Gothenburg, Sweden. MERCY highlights the extremity of grief and asks the listener to reflect on their relationship with loss and vulnerability. Pain can be the source of your power. Learn to greet it as a friend.

lyrics
In my seventh year
All the colours burned away
Monoxide peripheries
Ichorous and grey
A wastrels journey
Dragged to chaotic distance
The disconnect made whole
Given to the grave
This fortress of flesh and bone
Beatific in rigor
The bargain is struck, mindless and vile
Clawing out of deeper circles with the hands of a child
In my seventh year the shadows left the walls
The nightmares crept into the days
As days ceaselessly withered with a pall
My wreath of medication woven
My coronation made
Destined to be broken under the yoke
In bitterness I reign
In my fortress of flesh and bone I feel nothing
Not the searing of your touch
The lash of tongues
In my fortress of flesh and bone I am sovereign
In my seventh year I saw so much of the world
My first kiss from the bluest lips
And how the ground collapsed beneath me
The rain caking the ash on my limbs
The rain that never left
The very first day I witnessed safety
It was already long out of reach
Laughing with its taciturn sneer
The majesty of its insult
Mocking me with the violence and the hopelessness to come...

The album description mentions an “emotional apex.” That’s really the difference between Stare and the band’s previous albums. Ulcerate was always supremely technically proficient. I just didn’t care all that much. Their growth has come from making music you will feel. Metallurgical Fire

Heaviest thing I’ve heard all year along with Altarage. Okay I’ve been listening to this record for the past two weeks and it just gets better and better. Dissonant grooves galore Jacob Ballance
